TODAY is Day 21...
April 20, 2020, 7:00 AM.
Today is the day the chicks are scheduled to begin hatching. So far, we have one chick PIPPING - the process of using their EGG TOOTH to break the shell.
Yesterday, the chicks should have broken the MEMBRANE to have access to the AIR CHAMBER and were able to breath air for the first time! You may even hear some peeping at this point.
Today, the chicks begin using their egg tooth to break the shell by creating a hole. Then, it pecks a circle until a large hole is made and the chick can come out. At this point, they'll be wet and exhausted. It will take a few more hours to dry off, regain their energy and perk up.
Once they are dry, fluffy and walking around, we'll move them to the brooder (temporary, heated enclosure) until they're ready to go outside in the coop.
